Adventure on the High Seas, Part 2 ~ Explorer Notebook Pages

"...to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and civilizations, the boldly go where no man has gone before."

Today we begin our voyage on the high seas with famous explorers.  Starting with Marco Polo, we will travel the globe with the likes of da Gama, Magellan, and Cook.

We will record our findings in a Captain's Log made up of notebooking pages for each explorer.

The Cover Page includes a place for dates of entries and the compiler's name.  You may want to decorate the edges, or leave it as is.

Page 1 is a general information page.  It includes places to record the explorer's name, lifetime, birthplace, and claim to fame.  Also included here are areas to sketch or attach images of the explorer, his ship's banner/coat of arms, and clothing his sailors wore.

Page 2 is all about mapping.  Again, depending on the age of your children, you may trace, free-hand draw, or attach a copy of a map of the explorer's journey(s).  Be sure to include a map key and a compass rose.

Page 3 is a vertical timeline.  On this page, you will want to include the major events of the explorer's life.  You may want to also include one or two major events in world history to give larger context to the explorer's life events.  This timeline may include written entries and/or visual images with short captions.

Page 4 is an exercise in copy work.  I've taken one stanza from several historical nautical poems and provided space below for copy work.  There are 6 different sheets because we are studying 6 different explorers.  If you only do one explorer, you can choose from any of the sheets below, but you will only need one to complete the profile set.

You are welcome to use these sheets for your home school or co-op.  Please do not sell them or call them your own.  Thanks!

If you use our sheets, please drop us an email----addingtothebeauty (at) gmail (dot) com--- and let us know how it worked out for you.  We'd love to hear from you!

Bon Voyage,
~Allison

  1. This is wonderful! I would have used this when my children were young. Lovely graphics, too.
